Benefits Counseling Overview

Positive Resource Center has been providing benefits advocacy for San Francisco residents living with HIV/AIDS since 1987. From the beginning, we have dedicated ourselves to providing comprehensive, one-on-one benefits counseling and advocacy. In 2003, we expanded our mission to include representing people living with mental health issues who are referred by targeted Department of Public Health sites. Please call (415) 777-0333 for more information regarding eligibility and the intake process.

Why Is It Important To Meet With A Benefits Counselor?

PRC's skilled benefits staff will assess what benefits you may be eligible to receive and assist you in the application process. Accessing all available disability benefits is critical for most people living with mental health issues and/or HIV/AIDS who are disabled and unable to work. If your claim is denied, staff attorneys can also represent you with a reconsideration of your claim or a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge.

You may have already started working while disabled and encountered unexpected problems. Those problems may include disability checks suddenly ending, being assessed overpayments, and being given conflicting information about the working while disabled rules. Our monthly workshops can help you unravel those problems and plan for the future.

What Can You Expect During A Benefits Counseling Appointment?

During an appointment you will meet with a staff attorney or advocate whose goal is to represent you with your claim and advocate for you regarding Social Security disability (Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income).
